Replacing a broken sensor - shall I give the new sensor the same name as the old one or a different name?

Sensors and DIY

I have replaced a broken sensor - shall I give the new sensor the same name as the old one or a different name? Other people in the same situation have asked me this question as well. Thank you for an answer from the coordination or technical team of GROW! Kind regards, Tania

Dear Tania,

I would suggest to give it a slightly different name (eg. "sensorname_2", or "sensorname_B"). In this way you will be aware that you had 2 different sensors in the same location. Apart from that I would really discourage to give the exact same name, because of a couple of reasons:

  • it is almost impossible to re-install the sensor in the exact same location, and
  • different sensors can provide slightly different soil moisture readings Therefore, when the exact same name is given there might be some confusion in the interpretation of the data.

I hope this helps!
