Isle of Lewis

Introduce Yourself

Hi all, we have a croft in North Tolsta on the Isle of Lewis, we have several raised beds, a 250m^2 area for potatoes, onions, leeks, neeps and other outdoor crops and a 3x10 metre polytunnel. We would be interested to know more about our soil which is a mixture of peat, boulder clay and machair.

Hello Gavin,

Welcome to the GROW Hub, it sounds like you have a lot of growing going on! GROW is offering free training to participants who wish to learn more about their soils. We've run three online courses this year that you can still access for free, this is the link to the last course: https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/grow-soil-to-food - You can also take part in a citizen science polyculture experiment, as part of which participants will receive a free nutrient testing kit. You can read more and sign up here: https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/grow-soil-to-food if it's too late in the season for you to take part in the experiment, no worries, we will run it again next year as well as the online courses. Do let us know how you get on and if you have any questions. Are you a commercial grower or is it mainly for self-consumption?
